Maybe it’s the first truly warm nights, the packed outdoor restaurants, or the way everyone suddenly starts talking about “heading down the shore” as if it’s a second language around here! Memorial Day Weekend has always been more than just a long weekend — it’s the unofficial kickoff to summer.
You can feel the energy shift all across the suburbs and the city. Garden centers are overflowing, outdoor dining reservations become competitive, and every group text suddenly turns into plans for barbecues, boat days, Phillies games, and shore traffic strategy discussions. ( Are we taking 95 to the AC Expressway or are we taking Route 42? )

Because around here, “going to the shore” isn’t simply a vacation. It’s part of the culture. And— that’s why us natives spend the majority of our extra dollars saved up, to rent “down the shore” for a week or if you’re lucky- longer!
From Avalon and Stone Harbor to Ocean City, Sea Isle, Margate, and Cape May, generations of local families have built traditions around summer weekends spent on the coast. The drive down the Parkway with beach chairs packed in the trunk almost feels ceremonial at this point.
There’s something comforting about the familiar rhythms of a Jersey Shore summer: grabbing breakfast sandwiches before the beach, bike rides in the morning, pizza after a long beach day, sunsets on the bay, and those nights where everyone somehow ends up walking the boardwalk eating ice cream.

Hydrangeas begin blooming.
